Introduction

Hi everyone, JOA Mom here. 👩‍🍳

After a few smooth days of introducing Korean Beef Rice Porridge (Sogogi-Mium), I felt it was the right time to gently expand my baby’s flavor experience with a soft vegetable.

If you haven’t seen the base recipe yet, you can find it here: Korean Beef Rice Porridge (Sogogi-Mium)

Instead of mixing multiple vegetables at once, I chose one mild and gentle ingredient — zucchini.

That’s how we began making Korean Beef & Zucchini Porridge, also known as Sogogi Aehobak Mium. This Korean Beef & Zucchini Porridge is a balanced and gentle next step for babies around 6 months old who are beginning protein-based weaning foods.

When I first added zucchini, I was a little nervous. Would the texture remain smooth enough? Would it change the flavor too much?

To my surprise, zucchini’s natural mild sweetness softened the stronger taste of iron-rich beef. It quickly became one of our most reliable early protein meals, and Korean Beef & Zucchini Porridge soon became a recipe I came back to again and again.

Nutrition / Why this combo

Around 6 months of age, a baby’s natural iron stores begin to decrease. That’s why iron-rich foods like beef are commonly introduced during this stage.

The importance of nutrient-dense complementary feeding is also highlighted in the World Health Organization’s guidance on infant feeding. When I introduced beef alone, I noticed slightly firmer stools. After pairing it with zucchini — which has high water content and a soft texture — feeding felt more balanced within just a few days.

Here’s why Korean Beef & Zucchini Porridge works so well:

Iron & Zinc from Lean Beef
Supports brain development and immune function.

Hydration & Gentle Fiber from Zucchini
Helps digestion during the transition to protein-rich solids.

Natural Flavor Balance
Zucchini’s subtle sweetness softens beef’s stronger flavor.

In traditional Korean baby food, zucchini (ae-hobak) is often chosen as an early vegetable because it is gentle and easy to digest.

Cooking Tip

Instead of blending everything into one uniform puree, I like serving the components slightly separated.

Place the rice porridge base in the center, with beef puree on one side and zucchini puree on the other.

When I plated Korean Beef & Zucchini Porridge this way, my baby seemed more curious and engaged. She explored each section differently rather than simply swallowing a mixed blend.

Serving it this way can help babies recognize individual flavors, notice subtle texture differences, and build early food awareness.

Of course, mixing everything together works perfectly fine too.

Ingredients

Here’s everything you need for Korean Beef & Zucchini Porridge (1 serving).

🥩 Main Protein

  • 20g lean beef (tenderloin recommended)

🥬 Vegetables

  • 20g fresh zucchini (peeled and deseeded)

🍚 Grains

  • 18g fine rice flour

💧 Liquid

  • 360ml water or reserved beef broth

5 Simple Steps

1️⃣ Soak the Beef (Removing “Junae”)

Cut the beef into small pieces and soak in cold water for 15–20 minutes to remove excess blood. This helps create a cleaner, milder taste.

2️⃣ Make the Zucchini Puree

Peel the zucchini and remove the seed center. Steam until soft, then blend with a small amount of water until silky smooth. Strain through a fine mesh sieve for a lump-free texture.

3️⃣ Cook the Beef & Save the Broth

Boil the beef until fully cooked. Do not discard the cooking water — this becomes a light natural broth. Blend the cooked beef into a smooth puree.

4️⃣ Build the 20x Rice Base

Whisk rice flour into cold broth first to prevent clumping. Cook over medium-low heat for 5–7 minutes while stirring continuously until it becomes smooth and gently flowing.

5️⃣ Assemble the Bowl

Pour the rice base into a baby bowl. Add the beef and zucchini purees separately on top. Serve separately for exploration or mix if your baby prefers.

This is the stage where Korean Beef & Zucchini Porridge really comes together into a gentle, balanced meal.

JOA Mom’s Experience

The first time I introduced Korean Beef & Zucchini Porridge, I focused more on my baby’s reaction than on how much was eaten.

With beef alone, there was a slight hesitation. After adding zucchini, feeding time felt noticeably smoother and more relaxed.

I’ve learned that early feeding isn’t about finishing the bowl — it’s about gentle exposure. Some days are calm and easy. Other days are messy and unpredictable. Both are part of the journey.

This Korean Beef & Zucchini Porridge became one of our steady favorites because it felt balanced, simple, and comfortable for my baby.

A. For first introduction at 6 months, peeling is recommended. Around 7–8 months, you can gradually introduce small amounts of skin as texture progresses.

Q. My baby refuses zucchini. Should I stop?

A. No. Babies often need multiple exposures before accepting a new food. Try again calmly after a few days.

Q. Can I freeze Korean Beef & Zucchini Porridge?

A. Yes. Freeze in 10–20g cubes and use within 2 weeks.

Storage

🧊 Refrigerator: Up to 3 days

❄️ Freezer: Up to 2 weeks

🔥 Reheating: If Korean Beef & Zucchini Porridge thickens after refrigeration, add a small splash of warm water or breastmilk to restore a smooth consistency.

Closing

Introducing a new vegetable after beef may feel like a small step, but for your baby, it’s a meaningful one.

Some days they will eagerly accept every spoonful. Other days, they may pause, explore, or even refuse. That’s completely normal.

Korean Beef & Zucchini Porridge is more than just a balanced meal. It’s an opportunity for your baby to build confidence with new flavors in a gentle and reassuring way.

One flavor at a time. One calm feeding moment at a time. You’re doing an incredible job guiding that journey. 💛
